People ask ChatGPT what to buy. Here is how your store shows up.
Buyers have started asking ChatGPT and Google's AI what to buy, at real scale, and this summer Shopify switched on the plumbing that puts your products inside those answers. Here is what is actually live, with dates, and what a small store should do about it.
What changed, and when
- June 17. Shopify's Summer Editions turned on the Universal Commerce Protocol by default: AI shopping agents can read your catalog, and eligible products syndicate into ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and the Shop app without you building anything.
- July 6. Salesforce made its commerce agents generally available with native ChatGPT and Google AI Mode integration. The big platforms are wiring storefronts into AI surfaces as the default, not the experiment.
- July 16. A PYMNTS and Visa study found 48% of online shoppers now use AI while researching purchases.
- July 22. Alphabet's earnings: AI Overviews passed one billion monthly users and moved into more commercial queries.
What a small store does about it
- Check you are in. UCP and Shop app syndication have eligibility rules. Confirm your products are syncing in your Shopify admin's sales channels rather than assuming the default reached you.
- Clean the catalog like a robot reads it, because one now does. Titles that say what the thing is, complete descriptions, filled metafields, real availability. AI answers are assembled from your product data, and thin data means absent from the answer.
- Answer buying questions on your own pages. The queries AI intercepts are "best X for Y" questions. A plain page that honestly answers the question your product wins is the raw material an answer engine quotes.
- Watch where orders come from. New referrer names are showing up in analytics. You cannot manage the channel if you have not noticed it exists.
The honest read
This is early and moving fast, and anyone selling you a guaranteed ranking inside ChatGPT is selling weather. What is real: the surfaces exist, the default plumbing is on for Shopify stores, and the buyers arriving this way convert unusually well. The cheap move is being present and legible. The expensive move is pretending it is not happening until a competitor's product is the answer.
There is one more discovery channel that AI cannot intercept: another brand your customer already trusts, recommending you at the moment their sale just closed. That is the channel we are building in the open.
