What a creator actually costs you.
Creator affiliate is the cleanest paid channel in commerce right now. It is also a rate you can raise instantly and only lower after thirty days, paid to someone with no stake in your second order.
What you are actually agreeing to
Creator affiliate is real performance marketing and it works. You pay on a completed sale, refunds come out before the commission is calculated, and a creator who never sells anything costs you nothing. That is a better deal than an ad auction, and it is why so much of the category moved here.
But read the mechanics again. The rate is a ratchet. Raising it is instant. Lowering it, for the creators actually moving units, waits 30 days. Target rates override open rates, so the good creators end up on the higher number, permanently. Nobody sets a rate once.
The part nobody prices
A creator has no reason to care whether your second order happens. They are paid on the first one. When they move on, the audience moves with them, because it was never yours: the relationship was between the creator and their followers, and you were the product in the middle.
That is the difference between a channel and a relationship. Both can be worth paying for. They are not the same purchase.
The comparison worth doing
- Pull your affiliate commission rate for your top three products, and the rate you pay your best five creators. Weight it by units. That is your real creator rate, and it is usually higher than the number you think you set.
- Now write down what a partner brand costs you. A brand whose customer already bought from you, who has their own business to protect, and who is showing your product because they chose to.
- Compare the two on retention, not on first order. Ask which one still sends you customers in March.
The honest read
We are not going to tell you to stop paying creators. The commission model is honest, the attribution is clean, and for a launch it is hard to beat.
What we will say is that a brand who shares your customer is the one counterparty with a reason to care about your second order, because you are doing the same thing for them. That reciprocity is the entire product we are building, and it is the one thing a creator deal structurally cannot give you. Our own numbers on that are in the ledger we publish monthly.
