The trade

Your Meta ads bill grew this summer. Here is exactly why.

2 August 2026 · Lir Aroyo

If your Meta invoice looks bigger than your Ads Manager says it should, you are not imagining it. Two separate things happened this summer, and one of them never appears in the dashboard.

The fee you cannot see in Ads Manager

On July 1, Meta's location fees went fully live. They are charged by where the ad is served, not where your business sits: 2% for ads served in the UK, 3% for France, Italy and Spain, 5% for Austria and Turkey. The fee is added on top of your spend at billing time, which is why the invoice and the dashboard stopped agreeing. A US brand whose audience includes European shoppers pays it too.

The second number, from Meta's own earningsIn Q2 2026 Meta reported the average price per ad up 12% year over year. You are buying the same auction for more money, before any fees.

Three things to do this week

  1. Reconcile the invoice, not the dashboard. Pull the actual billing statements for July and compare against Ads Manager spend. The gap is your location-fee exposure, and most brands have never measured it.
  2. Price the fee into your numbers by country. If UK and EU customers are a big share, your real cost per customer there just moved a few points. Decide with the real figure, not the dashboard one.
  3. Recheck geo targeting on broad campaigns. Advantage+ style broad targeting will happily serve into the fee countries. That may still be worth it, but it should be a decision, not a surprise.

The honest read

None of this makes Meta ads stop working. It makes them cost more, in a way that compounds: the auction price rises with demand, and the fees ride on top and shift with regulation. Rented attention is repricing season by season, and the rent only moves one way.

The counterweight is anything you own outright: your list, your repeat customers, and the other brands who share your customer and would rather send them to you than to an auction. That last one is what we are building, and the August checklist has a concrete place for it before the season starts.
